How to restore old firefox look (before 89)

I hate new firefox 89 looks. I can tolerate buttons. I can even tolerate ugly frameless tabs. But I will not tolerate bookmarks that are twice as fat as before. This is waste of space. Before I was able to see all my bookmarks from bookmark menu on screen. Now they are superfat and I have to scroll constantly in every sub-folder. Am I supposed to buy 4k screen now just because devs decided to make everything big like in touch-screen computers, even for mouse and keyboard users? Why is there no compact view anymore, only normal and superfat touch mode?

Is there any easy way, preference or something to restore old thin look? I googled topic and found some info about css styles but it includes too much of interfering with browser for me to do it. I want easy and permanent solution.

same here, this is unacceptable...

Where can i downlad the last version in the mean time...

I hate it now.

Edit: reverting to last version.... downloads are here:

https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/88.0b9/ <-- THIS IS A LINK TO A BETA VERSION

Warning: Installing a previous version doesn't fix most problems

Problems with an update are generally not caused by the new version of Firefox, but rather the update process. Installing a previous version will not help in most cases. The best option is to start a new thread about your issues, where others can suggest specific solutions.

Using old versions of Firefox also poses a significant security risk.

Hi Piterk, unfortunately, as far as I know, CSS is the only solution at the moment. Hopefully my instructions are not too difficult to follow:

https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1337841

If you want Compact mode and it didn't convert, check my page here: https://www.userchrome.org/firefox-89-styling-proton-ui.html#compactmode

Regarding rolling back, old versions of Firefox are always available, but not recommended. There's more info in this article: Install an older version of Firefox.

I found partial workaround. in about:config change browser.proton.enabled to false. This restores old bookmarks view and old tabs view. However buttons and some menus like download menu are still new and broken. This is enough for me, because 2 most annoying things for me were tabs and bookmarks and this settings fixes this for now. They will probably remove support for this pref in the future and it will be ignored.

There are also few other settings when you search for browser.proton in abotu:config but I have no idea what they do and if they work.

Dont know what you are talking about...makes no sense. This should be a quick appearance fix...Firefox support is useless.

This discussion is about the appearance of the tabs on the tabs bar. Changing the preference also tightens up some toolbar drop-down lists. However, it doesn't work on most bookmark menus. If you want to try it as a first step:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste browser.proton.enabled and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the preference to switch between true (new Proton style) and false (old Photon style)

Since this was kept in just for testing, there might be some occasional glitches.

WARNING: There are plans to remove this preference in the next two months The preference setting was created as a toggle for developers when building the new design. Now that the new interface has shipped, the preference will be removed.

If you have any issues with the new design, please let us know what it is you don't like, and we can try provide more permanent solutions depending on the issue.

How about a workaround for the padding with the rt. click menu, other bookmarks menu, or show more bookmarks overflow?

Your timing is good, I just learned about this an hour ago:

There is a temporary preference that may provide partial relief:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste browser.proton.contextmenus.enabled and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the preference to switch between true (new style) and false (old style)

In my test, the Bookmarks menu on the optional top Menu Bar was messed up in the existing window, but looked okay in a new window.

If that doesn't help enough, you still have the option to use custom style rules in a userChrome.css file.

Great, Thank you, that worked

I think the new look is AWFUL!! Now I must waste my time to try to undo it or stop using Firefox all together. Firefox has been my default browser for as long as I can remember and I've recommended to others but now I'll have to move away from it myself. AWFUL, JUST AWFUL to change the user interface on people like this. I thought the Firefox team was better than this. I am completely disappointed in the new look.

How about Mozilla Firefox put the Bookmarks menu back the way it was? The new way is cumbersome and not user friendly. Or how about giving users a choice instead of making impactful, harmful decisions that only make things worse? Create a default and different options to set as personal default. Should be easy to do in this day and age. But no. Mozilla Firefox would rather make some changes that are awful thinking they know what is best for everybody.

Correct. It's just to get you through the month.

Support volunteers can provide information on settings, add-ons, and other creative workarounds. We don't make development decisions. Meanwhile, Mozilla people are monitoring for hot topics, so thank you for the feedback.

Totally agree with "rv4fun" .....You know Mozilla Firefox if you need to make changes they should always be beneficial changes...for everyone...this change is not....not only that, when you make a change you should always provide additional direct support to help people with it. I will give you some time to make necessary improvements to your service...if you don't....let me remind you....you are not the only Browser available...!!

I also do not like new context menu order. Remove and bookmark properties to change name (on bookmarks bar) are 2 most commonly used options. They were easily accessible before on bottom of menu and now you have too look for them in the middle of context menu list.

Disable proton settings in about:config didn't bring back missing "click-to-toggle" top sites list on search page :(

Do you mean you prefer the old style of the Top Sites tiles that had a little thumbnail image? You can roll back this change using a preference, but I don't know how long we'll have it:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste newNew and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.newNewtabExperience.enabled preference to switch the value from true to false

More info on about:config: Configuration Editor for Firefox.

That definitely changes the Top Sites back to the old style, but I don't know what else it changes.

I have to add my voice to the chorus of disapproval over the line spacing issue. I had my bookmarks toolbar carefully organised into folders so I could see all my bookmarks on screen without having to scroll. The new version ruined that by introducing vast amounts of wasted blank space. Many thanks for the userChrome.css solution, which worked for me once I'd figured out exactly where to put the file (I initially created the 'chrome' folder in 'Mozilla > Firefox > profiles', when it needed to go into the 'xxx.default-release' subfolder). But there really ought to be an easier solution that won't stop working in a few weeks.

Hi everyone, It doesn't look like the person who posted the original question is going to respond, and others seem to be using this thread for there own issues, so I'm going to lock this thread.

For better help, it would be best to use https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/new where volunteers can get more details about your setup.
