I am using Firefox with group speed dial. I recently switched from Chrome because it would freeze often. Firefox does not freeze, but nearly every request for a new site brings back "Hmm, we are having trouble getting to that site, or something similar. I can refresh from 1 to 5 times, and eventually it comes up and works fine. I love the speed dial, but if it has a problem in Firefox I might have to go back to Chrome, which I really don't want to do.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

I am helpless without speed dial. It sorta makes my home page look like a smart phone, with all the apps in one spot. I tried safe mode, and most sites came up, although I did have trouble finding my favorite websites. In one case I again got the Hmm message, although the other sites loaded OK. Speed dial might be my problem. Incidentally, I am on a windows laptop. I wonder if anyone else has trouble loading websites with speed dial with Firefox and windows. I do appreciate your advice, and will continue to experiment with safe mode.

As a test, disable speed dial and see if the problem is still there. If it is, contact their support.

It is possible that your firewall or other security software blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox application. Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process. See:

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.
