Why has my Compose Message in Gmail stop working in Firefox?

When I go to Gmail, I can respond to email messages, but cannot compose new messages. This is a recent problem with in the past few days.

I have updated Firefox, but nothing changed. If I can't get a fix, I'll have to delete Firefox (my favorite option) and go to something else that works because I need the email feature.

Thanks for any help.

Hello, in other browsers, your compare a email works?

more options

It doesn't work with any browser at all; Chrome, IE or Firefox.

Try composing an email with Firefox safe mode: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

Some basic things would be reload the page, delete the cache + cookies on the browser, logout n re-login. etc.

Doesn't work with any browser. I even tried to update everything and turn off add ons and extensions, still doesn't work.

It works on my iPhone and iPad apps, but not on my laptop where I need it most.

Yep, tried all the basic things you suggested and still nothing. I did it with each browser and no change. Frustrating. LOL

Really bizarre, has it worked before in the past? Just out of the blue, can you try running an Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware scan just to ensure nothing is preventing that Compose Email script.

Yes, it has always worked. Good idea, I'll try the virus scan.

I'll close everything and run that now and see what happens.

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the cache and remove the cookies from websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Clear the cache":

  • Options/Preferences -> Advanced -> Network -> Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove the cookies" from websites that cause problems.

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy -> "Use custom settings for history" -> Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Well goodness!

I followed all the steps in your post as carefully as possible and it still doesn't work in Firfox, IE or Chrome.

Because it doesn't work with any browser, it seems like the problem must be with the actual Gmail account. Does that make sense?

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
