I want to keep messages on Thunderbird but delete them in Earthlink. My deleting used to be independent, but sometime last year that stopped, probably after some upgrade (?) . How can I change it back so that e-mails deleted in Earthlink dont affect e-mails downloaded in Thunderbird?

I got so far when setting it up asked for the password. I tried all passwords I have saved for different accounts: Earthlink and Firefox. I dont have any saved for Thunderbird, either in my notes or on line. SO it wont run the new account, How can I find the password?

Sounds like you are using IMAP. That is expected behavior for IMAP. You may have been using POP before.

So how do I change back? Where can I find the place that sets the IMAP or POP systems?

You do not change the account. You add a new account and choose the right protocol this time. Here are the instructions. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/faq-changing-imap-pop

Contact your provider. It wants your email password.

Thanks everything is now solved. I had tried the password but there was a capitalization I wrote down wrong. Now the POP server is doing exactly what I wanted.
