Firefox was working fine and suddenly, after a computer re-start, was VERY slow. I've tried everything including uninstalling. Help!

I've literally tried everything listed in these forums--refreshing, checking extensions and ultimately uninstalling & reinstalling. To no avail--Firefox is Crawling, to the point of being unusable. Meanwhile, IE and Chrome are working just fine. Please help, I want my Firefox back!

Hi,

So it sounds like you have already followed the advice here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-add-ons-and-settings if not then I'd say that's a good place to start.

If this has removed all your extensions so that you're running a total clean install and that hasn't helped then it's probably a good idea to look at what refreshing doesn't do. I've got my eyes on plugins. Try disabling your plugins (different to extensions but on the same settings page) one-by-one to identify a culprit.

A range of possibilities are also discussed here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-slow-how-make-it-faster

Hopefully one of these might help you! Let me know how you get on!

Thanks, Dave

Refresh Firefox {web link} is a LAST RESORT ! !

Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings

If you're having problems with Firefox, refreshing it can help. The refresh feature fixes many issues by restoring Firefox to its default state while saving your essential information like bookmarks, passwords, and open tabs.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).

Is the problem still there?

Start your Computer in safe mode with networking. Then start Firefox. Try Safe websites. Is the problem still there?

OK, so I tried disabling all of my add-ons and that did not work. I tried opening in Safe Mode (Again) and it did speed up somewhat. Still slow, but at least usable. I then did a refresh (Again) and tried disabling all extensions and plug ins...and it's still crawling. I've tried every option under the 'make it faster' article. I have not tried re-starting my computer in safe mode, only because IE and Chrome are working just fine. Any other ideas?

Running the computer in Safe Mode checks to see if another program is causing Firefox problems since only system programs would be running.

Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar. Under Advanced, Select General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open the Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control>(Mac=<Command>) <Shift> A)

On the left side of the page, select Appearance. Then select Default.

Now restart Firefox.

Fred, I tried the two solutions you offered and re-started Firefox. Nothing. So then I used your suggestion of starting the computer in Safe Mode. Firefox started up without any lag time in safe mode. Even thought I chose 'safe mode with networking,' I couldn't get my computer to connect. So I restarted. At first, Firefox worked fine. Then I closed out and tried to re-open the app after about 5 minutes and it was back to crawling again. Did the sequence a second time--safe mode, then regular re-start--with the same results. I'm guessing that, to your point, another program is interfering with Firefox, but how do I figure out what it is?

Let's check a few things.

Some problems occur when your Internet security program was set to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow Firefox to connect to the Internet again;

  • Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
  • Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see

Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet. {web link}

You may have ad / mal-ware. Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

It is possible that your firewall or other security software blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to install for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.
