Do you want to roll back to the earlier Yahoo toolbar, or just get rid of it completely?

Background

Yahoo changed its toolbar Monday:

On August 1, 2016 we will simplify the Firefox Yahoo Toolbar and upgrade your browser to the New Tab by Yahoo extension experience. This extension provides a static version of Yahoo Toolbar and customizes your new tab page with Flickr photos and quick access to your top sites. Please note, you will no longer be able to modify your toolbar layout.

Unofficial Roll Back Procedure

Here's how I suggest going about it:

(1) Remove the new toolbar on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then on the right side find and remove the Yahoo extensions. These may include:

  • Yahoo! Toolbar and New Tab 5.0.2 -- version numbers visible when you click the More link below the extension's title
  • Search and New Tab by Yahoo 1.0.6

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled/removed extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

(2) Install version 3.2.18.20160725095733 -- the July 26th version -- of the toolbar from the following page:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/yahoo-toolbar-and-new-tab/versions/ -- it's currently the second one down

Before restarting Firefox, go back to the Add-ons page, click the More link under the Yahoo Toolbar extension, and turn off automatic updating. (In case you closed the page...)

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Find Yahoo toolbar on the right side and click the tiny More link under the title, then on that page, find the row for Automatic Updates and set it to Off.

Then you can use the restart link for the toolbar to complete the installation.

Success?

You have retreated to the DOS era solution of a Systemic Problem. Your solution is ridiculous in today's world.

Hi paulc37, I remember DOS, and DOS didn't work like this at all. I never suggested dropping to a command line and typing out cryptic commands.

Let me break it down:

To get rid of an unwanted add-on that has taken over your new tab page, you need to remove that add-on.

Where, you ask?

From the Add-ons page.

How, you ask?

You can open that page using either of these methods:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions.

And then what?

Look on the right side at your installed extensions. Look at each one and click its Disable button if it is either: (A) related to Yahoo in some manner, (B) unknown or suspicious, or (C) not necessary for your needs.

And are you done?

Not necessarily. Some extensions won't actually be disabled until you restart Firefox. Firefox will signal you by showing a link above the extension in that case. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Now are you done?

Yes! You're done with the removal and your new tab page should work normally again.

And what if that's all too complicated?

You can use the Refresh feature, which is described in this article: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.

There is no extension menu item in my Tools/Add- on Menu.

The alternative says it wipes out all extensions.

I have Verizon which has Yahoo as my E mail source,

I was afraid to use as I could lose my E mail.

Tools > Add-ons should open a full page in a new tab. The left column should have a list along the lines of Get Add-ons, Extensions, Appearance, Plugins. Yours doesn't look like that? Here's a random screenshot of some lists.

That's the idea. Refresh is useful if you get stuck and cannot fix it.
