Downloaded the installer for Thunderbird 31.4.0 Double clicking on the installer does not launch the installation program (although a process is created as can be seen in the Task Manager). The reason for downloading the installer was that the automatic update was failing in 31.3.0 and was asking me to download the installer.

Platform: Windows 8.1

I had tried running as Administrator and also disabling the AV/Firewall.

A reboot solved the problem and I was able to launch the installer and install 31.4.0 after the reboot. However there is a thunderbird window called "Software Update" that shows a progress bar and says "Downloading update" & "Connecting to the update server" - however it seems to be stuck there forever.

I killed the Software update process and now the system seems to be at peace.

Thanks for the help!

sounds like it could be one of the following.

1. You do not have install permissions in Windows 8. Right click the file and select run as administrator.

2. Your anti virus is being overly protective.

3. Other security software is blocking the launch of the task.

4. Windows installer is broken
