I've just downloaded Thunderbird and am trying to sync my gmail and @icloud emails to this. Is it compulsory to sign up to a Thunderbird email (which I am being charged for)?

No. Thunderbird is free software that you can use to manage any existing email account that you have. They just partner with ghandi as a provider for those that might not have an existing email account.
Select Existing Mail Account when doing the setup process.
