disable switching between tabs by numbers (1 and 2)

more options

Lately, I accidentally noticed that when I press the keys for numbers 1 and 2 on my keyboard, Firefox switches between the open tabs (back and forth, previous and current, and so on). Sometimes, it even happens while the focus is in a text box or an input field in the page and when I type "2" for example in this text field, the browser switches to the second tab...

I simply wish to disable this feature and couldn't find any way to do it.

I went over some items under "about:config", I even installed the "keyconfig" add-on, I went over dozens of results after searching the web, but none of these helped me solve this annoying issue.

Please let me know if and how these keys can be disabled, so I won't give up on Firefox and switch to the other popular browser (rhymes with dome).

This would normally only happen with the Ctrl 1 to 8 keyboard shortcuts.

It is possible that some of the status keys have the wrong state and Firefox sees them as still pressed.

Try to press all the status keys (Shift, Ctrl, Alt) a few times to see if that helps to recover from this. If it doesn't help then close and restart Firefox or reboot the computer.

Try to close and restart Firefox if pressing the status keys doesn't help.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Thank you for the fast reply, but I'm afraid none of the things you suggested here has helped me with the issue at hand. This has got nothing to do with the CTRL+[num] shortcut keys, because I have disabled them (using the Keyconfig add-on) and the problem still remains. I confirm that this add-on indeed works, because when I press CTRL+[num] (and specifically "1" and "2"), nothing happens in the tabs. When pressing "1" and "2" on the keyboard (without the CRTL key), the switch between tabs still occurs, unfortunately. Further more, when I run Firefox in SafeMode, this still happens, which means this is not related to any add-on installed on Firefox. Can you think of other possible reason for this situation and ways to solve it? Thanks.

Hello, I have the same problem you will just need to restart your pc. It might come back if it does do this!

Hello,

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions and some Preferences.

  • Open websites will not be saved in Firefox versions lower than 25.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

For Firefox versions previous to 29.0:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox"Button reset button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

For Firefox 29.0 and above:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. Now, a new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Reset Firefox"Button reset. Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Thank you.
