Some websites duplicate their URLs in history stack; cannot return to their parent with a single keystroke or mouse click.

On some websites, when I click on the left arrow or use the backspace key, the browser doesn't return to the parent URL. Looking at the list of currently-accessed URLs, the current URL is duplicated in the stack, so hitting back or left arrow just brings me back to the same (duplicated) URL. For instance:

  site x    <= current page
  site x
  parent

This just started happening recently (within the last two or three updates). It happens on several, but not all sites.

Thanks!

Back essentially means "revert the last navigation action that took place on this page".

Does doubleclicking on the back button get from site x(b) back to the parent site?

When you see the duplicated history entries, is this due to going back to a page and clicking on a different url. (going back multiple times)?

If we can find an example site and clear specific Steps to reproduce, let's get this in a bug in bugzilla.mozilla.org because this sounds like it is not expected.

This can happen if there were redirects or otherwise forms submitted. In such a case you can hold down the mouse button on the Back button to open the tab history and select the entry that you need.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Also make sure that you aren't blocking the redirect/reload.

  • Firefox > Options/Preferences > Advanced > General : Accessibility : [ ] "Warn me when web sites try to redirect or reload the page"
