I have tried uninstalling and re-installing and this has had no effect. It came to light when I tried to access my emails on Hotmail.com and it says that i need to update Mozilla to continue or use the mobile site.I have also been into 'About Firefox' and that says it is up to date. Any help would be appreciated.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/websites-say-firefox-outdated-or-incompatible#w_firefox-is-showing-the-wrong-user-agent

Your useragent is stuck at 3.6.17 due to a extension which added stuff to UA at time. Firefox 4.0 and newer UA's are not affected this way.

Hello, confirm James's reply, your user agent is corrupted by Fast Browser Search (FBSMTWB) and that identifies you as Firefox/3.6.17

your User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.17) Gecko/20110420 Firefox/3.6.17 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) FBSMTWB

try James link to solve the problem.

thank you

Note that your System Details List shows that you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize some prefs each time you start Firefox.

The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created it, so normally it wouldn't be there. you can check its content with a plain text editor if you didn't create this file yourself.

The user.js file is read each time you start Firefox and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.

You can delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js
