Recently I am unable to pull up saved passwords when logging on to sites I use regularly. I can go to Settings, Privacy & Security & check the box "Ask to Save Passwords". The saved passwords then stay on even if I close & reopen Firefox. All is then well until the next time I restart the PC. Then it defaults back to an unchecked box. How can I set the PC so that the "Ask to Save" button stays on? Upgraded to Windows 11 about 1 month back. Thanks.

In the past, this sometimes was caused by security software on your computer that tries to replace or override your browser-based password managers with its own password manager. Do you have any security software extensions that might be the culprit? You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • click the Extensions button (puzzle piece) on the toolbar > Manage Extensions
  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. On the right side, find the "Manage Your Extensions" heading.

If there is at least one extension before the next heading -- "Recommended Extensions" -- please continue:

Then cast a critical eye over the list below that heading. Any extensions Firefox installs for built-in features are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything password-related? It's also a good opportunity to check for anything suspicious or that you just do not remember installing or why. If in doubt, disable (or remove). For your privacy and security, don't let mystery programs linger here.

Note: Sometimes extensions can frustrate access to this page. In that case, first restart Firefox in its Troubleshot Mode and then try again. See: Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox -- Open, not Refresh.

Tried it both in Regular & Troubleshoot modes. Had only two Add Ons, "Trend Micro Tool Bar" & "New Tab Override". Disabled them one at a time then both restarting the PC each time. Problem still is occurring. Both are now back on since there was no change. Any other thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks for the try

There are a few different ways that the password manager might get switched off at startup other than an add-on. These involve external settings:

(1) Enterprise Policy

If you type or paste about:policies in the address bar and pres Enter to Load that page, does the "Active" panel list any policies? Normally it says "The Enterprise Policies service is inactive." Does yours mention anything about "OfferToSaveLoginsDefault". Note that you can ignore the Documentation list, that doesn't indicate what is active on your browser.

(2) user.js file

This is an option file you can create or install into your active Firefox profile folder. Such a file could set the signon.rememberSignons preference to false, which will override the status saved from the last session. If you have a user.js file, it will be listed on the Troubleshooting Information page. See: Use the Troubleshooting Information page to help fix Firefox issues.

(3) Startup script file

To investigate, you can check the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\pref

Normally, the ONLY file here is channel-prefs.js (if Windows doesn't show the file extension, you can enable them: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/common-file-name-extensions-in-windows-da4a4430-8e76-89c5-59f7-1cdbbc75cb01)

If there are any other files in this folder, you can check their contents using right-click > Edit (or right-click > Edit in Notepad). Do not double-click .js files because Windows will execute them as system scripts.

Still working on it. Results so far

1. "The Enterprise Policies service is inactive." is the only message in this folder

2. I worked my way through the active Firefox profile folder but could not find a user.js file. Is this Java script file something I could create?

3. The channel-prefs.js is the only visible file
