Firefox will not save my password on one site.
I have been going to http://caloriecount.about.com/ (CC) for years now. I logged in when I got my new laptop ~two years ago, and if I ever had to sign in again, the site remembered my login information, and I only had to click "Log In."
For the last week or two, maybe longer (time & I do not always communicate), I have suddenly started having problems with FF crashing constantly (several times a day) and, when it comes back up, I am signed out of CC and cannot get back in without re-entering the url in the address bar to get to the sign-in screen. It also does not remember my user name or password, so I have to enter those again, too. FF does not ask if I want it to remember them for me. The first few times this happened, it was mystifying, but now it is just annoying. It does not happen to any other site. CC is the only site affected by this. I have also contacted their help desk, but so far, they have no ideas.
I have checked the page information screen, which tells me that I have been to the site 4,007 times, which seems likely, but it says that I have never saved a password for this site, which is not true. FF used to know my user name and password, but now it does not.
I found a page full of "bookmarklets," one of which promises to force FF to ask to save your user name and password. I used it correctly, it asked, I said, 'yes', and when I checked the information box, it said that I had saved a password for the site. I logged out in the normal way, went to the sign-in screen, and FF remembered my user name and password. I thought the problem was solved.
Then FF crashed again. When I returned to the site, it had me logged out and did not remember any user name or password. The information box again claimed that I had never saved a password for this site.
I am truly at a loss and would appreciate any advice.

Thank you for your help. I updated to FF 29, which I do not like the look of, btw. I have not had a crash yet today, so perhaps it is more stable, and the one website that could not remember me seems to remember me now.
I still have no idea what the problem was, unless it was in the user.js file, which I deleted, but at least it is over for now. I also do not know which of the things I tried solved the problem or if the problem is only temporarily halted.
In any case, I do appreciate the effort you all put into resolving the issue.

Hello, Can you please try restarting Firefox in safe mode On Windows you can do this by Simply pressing and holding the SHIFT button and then double clicking the Firefox Icon on your desktop Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.
Moreover as you have stated about crashing of Firefox, can you please provide us Crash reports
- In the address bar, type about:crashes and press Enter. A list of links to your crash reports will appear.
- copy the Crash ID starting with bp------ and paste here in the reply box.
Moreover you have a User.js file in your profile, these files are not created by Firefox automatically, if you haven't created it then it should not be present there. See How to fix preferences that won't save to delete that file.
please reply back to us.

There are more prior to 4/17, but that is the date when they began to be a daily occurrence. I think FF may have crashed sometimes without generating a report because I remember writing in the "Tell Mozilla about this event" box and stating that it was "my fifth crash today", but I only see one instance of 5 crashes in a day, and I am pretty sure that a day of more than 5 crashes happened more than once.
Anyway, if you want the earlier crash reports, I am glad to provide them.
I was advised by a non-Mozilla person that the crashing problem was "probably related to an add-on. The only new add-on that I had at that time was No Script, which wasn't doing what I wanted it to do anyway, so I did uninstall that sometime during the last several days.
I will work on your other instructions and reply back.
Interesting. I have read the bit about the user.js file. I don't know how this file was generated. It does not seem to be something I would have initiated. When I went into my files to delete it, it automagically changed to a .BAK file. Is that normal?
I copied the contents of the file before deleting it, so I could paste it here:
user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server", 4); user_pref("nglayout.initialpaint.delay", 600); user_pref("content.notify.interval", 600000); user_pref("content.max.tokenizing.time", 1800000); user_pref("content.switch.threshold", 600000);
I am not clear about why starting in safe mode is going to be helpful. The problem usually takes quite a long time between happenings. It happens several times a day, but it doesn't happen constantly. Is there something I should be doing in safe mode that will help diagnose the problem?
I look forward to your next instructions.
This look like out-of-memory crashes when examining the crash stack, but the System Memory Use Percentage isn't that high with about 40%.
See:
I had been having what I thought were out-of-memory crashes early in April, and for ages before that, so I upgraded from 4gigs to 16gigs of RAM (2x 8gb sticks). I should not have memory-related problems anymore.
Firefox usually takes about 2gigs of memory on my system. When I only had 4gb of RAM, this was a problem. That was part of why I upgraded.
ETA: When I run FF in safe mode, it also uses about 2 gigs of memory. I keep a lot of tabs open.

Hello,
please try resetting Firefox Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings
Do you have any other suggestion besides, "Burn it to the ground and start over"? Isn't there any information in the crash reports that can help diagnose the actual problem so that it can be avoided in the future?
Also: What happens to my bookmarks if I reset it to factory defaults? Do I need to save them first? What about my current tabs and windows? Do I lose those when I reset everything?
Hello,
What does the reset feature do?
All of your Firefox settings and personal information are stored in a profile folder. The reset feature works by creating a new profile folder for you while saving your important data.
Firefox will save these things:
- Bookmarks
- Browsing history
- Passwords
- Open windows, tabs and tab groups
- Cookies
- Web form auto-fill information
- Personal dictionary
These items and settings will be removed:
Extensions and themes, website-specific preferences, search engines, download history, DOM storage, security settings, download actions, plugin settings, toolbar customizations, user styles and social features will be removed.
Note: Your old Firefox profile will be placed on your desktop in a folder named "Old Firefox Data." If the reset didn't fix your problem you can restore some of the information not saved by copying files to the new profile that was created. If you don't need this folder any longer, you should delete it as it contains sensitive information.
(Intermediate) certificate stored in the cert8.db file are lost as well.
In a lot of cases where it isn't certain whether a reset will work, it is usually better to first try a new profile without making modifications as there is still a slight chance that importing (recovering) data might carry over the issue, especially if there are issues with data that is recovered.
Details like websites remembering you (log you in automatically) are stored in a cookie.
- Create a cookie 'allow' exception to keep such cookies, especially in case of secure websites and when cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
- Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: Exceptions
If clearing cookies didn't help then it is possible that the cookies.sqlite file that stores the cookies got corrupted.
- Rename (or delete) cookies.sqlite (cookies.sqlite.old) and delete other present cookies files like cookies.sqlite-journal in the Firefox profile folder in case the file cookies.sqlite got corrupted.
You can inspect and manage the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab via these steps:
- Click the "Site Identity Button" (globe/padlock) on the location bar
- Click "More Information" to open "Tools > Page Info" with the Security tab selected
- Go to the Permissions tab (Tools > Page Info > Permissions) to check the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab
