Hi Sue, if you check either of these, can you find your bookmarks under a different category/folder:

  • Sidebar (Ctrl+B)
  • Library (Ctrl+Shift+O as in Organizer)

How about your history, do you still have that?

If CCleaner did some cleaning on your Firefox data, I suggest starting with a normal shutdown and/or restart of your system. Restarting Windows can help by freeing up locked files, completing any deferred updates, and resolving temporary file permission issues.

Next, if Firefox still has bookmark problems, could you let us know what you get when you run the "Verify Integrity" diagnosis and repair function. That's here:

Open Firefox's Troubleshooting Information page using any of these methods:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Near the bottom, there is a section titled Places Database -- that's the file which stores history and bookmarks. Click the button labeled Verify Integrity. There may be a 10-15 second delay before results appear.

If all is well, the report that appears below the button should start with:

> Task: checkIntegrity
+ The places.sqlite database is sane
+ The favicons.sqlite database is sane
> Task: invalidateCaches
+ The caches have been invalidated
> Task: checkCoherence
+ The database is coherent

Does yours say that, or something else? You can select and copy the report, and then paste it into a reply for review and comment.

Hi jscher2000, I've been hit by the same problem, almost certainly because of a ****** CCleaner update last night. (see Attachment 1 for the message that comes whenever I launch Firefox since then)

And unfortunately, going through the steps you suggest (after trying other & shorter forms of troubleshooting), what I get as a "Verify Integrity" result is (also as Attachment 2 below):

" > Task: checkIntegrity - Unable to fix corruption, places.sqlite will be replaced on next startup > Task: checkCoherence - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: expire - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: vacuum - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: stats - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: _refreshUI - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. "

It looks as if CCleaner has assassinated my Bookmarks - also my Bookmarks Toolbar (or at least all content in it - furthermore, I cannot any longer save any Bookmarks in Firefox:

Trying to bookmark a page elicits no response. A "dead click", whether clicking the Bookmark Star, or trying to save via menu dropdown.

Hence in hope of a response from you, I will have to save this page address in a text file (!), and post it into Firefox periodically.

Oh, and what is more: I cannot even Import my last Bookmarks collection in html format (backed up April 2025 - yes, I know, I should have saved a copy every week...!), as that facility too apparently has been destroyed (going through the usual steps to "Import Bookmarks as html" gives zero response. That too is a dead button, so to speak.)

This could not be much more successful as a commando attack on my Bookmarks, - or my ability to bookmark, keep or access Bookmarks in any way further in Firefox.

Given all that annihilation of data, references & facilities - nothing to do with Bookmarks now works - I don't know whether to just give up and start again from scratch with another Browser: I greatly value my Bookmarks, and ability to bookmark new & old sites/pages - I have lost a hell of a lot of reference points built up over time.

I would be grateful for any lead, suggestion or advice you can give.

I can't see my response to that here - maybe awaiting moderation? - but have since also found this message, which goes some way to confirming my worst fears of "data assassination" by CCleaner:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1512851

Only I find it's not only the data that's been deleted without warning, permission and beyond recall (shocking as all that is) AFAICS, but any ability at all to save, store, access, reload or replace stock of Bookmarks. ... horrendous.

(Well, that uploaded, so I'll try my previous post again now:)

Hi Peter, on the above line, Firefox is saying that it will set aside your places.sqlite database file the next time you exit/quit/restart Firefox and start a new one. It will be populated from your last automatic bookmark backup. If you haven't tried that yet, try it now so you can see how well it works.

Thanks for the prompt reply jscher~~~

Well, I didn't try that, in fact. But after removing all traces of the bad update of CCleaner, and adding one or two more cleans, the Bookmarks are back!

I had tried restarting both FF and then Windows, neither of which produced a result. Nor did leaving it overnight, and trying again ( :o) )

But something triggered a restore ... so thank you for taking the time and effort to reply to me, and so soon. I'll go easy next time I am offered updates or upgrades .... esp as that was CCleaner 7 BETA, an unwise blunder on my part.

But now I have various other Bookmarks problems.

Maybe it was a FF update after all - not the CCleaner I've been blaming. The latter was my deliberate choice ::: whereas I fear FF is one of those programs that likes to update (though not necessarily upgrade, if it causes conflicts and losses!!) automatically, without notification or permission. I may have to look for a way to reject automatic updates .... And it does appear a recent FF change (maybe around same time as CCleaner 7) has caused other users problems ...

Anyway, having searched for FAQs or others' problems with Bookmarks in FF in the last few days, and having found nothing, I will ask about these fresh Bkmrks problems in a new thread! Maybe you @jscher2000 or someone else will be so kingd as to offer advice.
