Add-ons sometimes won't load anymore

Hi all,

I've upgraded to Thunderbird 60, as well as suffered a HDD crash. After recovering from both, half of the time my Thunderbird client won't load any addons anymore when starting it up. Another issue in that case is that when I fetch new mail, mail filtering won't kick in, although that might be explained by the FiltaQuilla add-on not loading up.

The HDD crash is mostly unrelated (I think), since my entire Thunderbird profile is located in an encrypted VeraCrypt volume container file, which I recovered intact from a backup. I.e., the entire profile folder is stored sort-of in a zip file, and upon recovering the zip it was perfectly fine.

What I did find out is that when add-ons won't load, and I go to the add-on manager, some add-ons won't have an icon next to them. Disabling just any random add-on in the list, then restarting Thunderbird, followed by re-enabling the add-on, and restarting Thunderbird again, fixes the issue for the upcoming time.

The add-ons I have installed, are: - CompactHeader - FiltaQuilla - ImportExportTools - Lightning - Manually sort folders - Quickfolders - Quicktext There are no unsupported add-ons anymore (sadly, like Search with Google).

I've thought about recreating the profile, but I shudder at the though. I have lots of e-mail accounts configured, the above extensions are also already set up to my liking, and I've tweaked a lot of Thunderbird settings themselves. So some probing suggestions to test what might be the issue here are most welcome!

There are add-ons which advertise compatibility with TB60, but in fact haven't been updated to work with this version. Manually sort folders is one example, it is definitely broken in TB60. There is a working version available at https://github.com/Ximi1970/Manually-Sort-Folders/releases

If in doubt, permanently disable a potentially problematic add-on and see how that goes.

For incompatible add-ons contact the add-on author, or look for a working alternative.

Lightning is always updated for the latest version of TB.

Thanks for that!

It could very well be an incompatible add-on, but the strange thing is that once I disable/restart/enable/restart a random add-on, all add-ons work normally again (or so it seems).

Then again maybe the irregularity I experience with this issue could come from some add-on doing some once-a-day task at startup, which breaks and locks out further add-on loading. Restarting alone would probably fix such an issue. Since all add-ons are loading fine again at the moment, I'll keep an eye out for it and test accordingly.

Another observation: when the add-ons won't load, expanding the menu option "Tools\Add-on options" will show no icons for any add-on, apart from ImportExportTools. Clicking on any add-on menu item from there will hang Thunderbird at 0% CPU usage. It thus seems one/some of the add-ons are hanging at that moment? Clicking the add-on options for Lightning doesn't hang, though...

I've disabled "Manually sort folders" for now to see if the problem persists; if not, I'll try the rest one by one. Problem though is that the issue doesn't manifest itself every time.

This is expected - addons which are disabled won't show their options

Indeed, but in my case I had all add-ons enabled. It seems likely some add-on is not loading properly and hanging the rest up.

I've trial-and-errored my way through the add-on list (temporarily disabling another add-on until the problem goes away), and it seemed FiltaQuilla was the culprit. The developer states he's indeed working for TB 60.3 compatibility, but then again since I've re-enabled it a few days ago, all add-ons are working fine again? Just checked, and FiltaQuilla was updated 3 days ago :)

Seems my issue is solved for now. But it does seem that once one add-on plays foul, it can take the rest (and even TB as a whole) down with it.
