There's indication that I have new message, but they don't appear in my "in" box. How do I view them?

I click "get messages." I see the small popup with notification that I've received messages, and I hear the tone indicating that messages are coming in. But when the popup disappears, there are no new messages in my "in" box. I'm losing messages. How do I avoid this?
