Hi, firefox was working fine for the longest time and suddenly, it just wouldn't display on my screen. The icon is there, it looks like it's trying to load and nothing happens. I uninstalled it and reinstalled, didn't help. Did the updates on 2 plugins, that didn't help either. It seems the comp thinks firefox is up and running but there's just no moniter display at all. I know this as when I do a comp clean up, it will tell me to shut down Firefox first before continuing. Not sure why this has happened suddenly. Any help and instruction would be really appreciated. Thanks, Steve. I've tried everything I know.

Try turning off the process using the Task Manager, then launch it.

Thanks for your fast reply. Can you take me through the process of how to do this. I'm a senior still learning. Thanks much, Steve.

I think finitarry means the following:

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to call up the Windows XP Task Manager. (It's also one of the buttons when you press Ctrl+Alt+Del)

There are two tabs where Firefox might appear:

  • Applications: usually this means Firefox launched fully and is running in a window you should be able to see. You could try switching to it on the Applications tab, or "kill" it using End Task.
  • Processes: when Firefox doesn't load fully, you may find firefox.exe on the Processes tab even if it isn't listed on the Applications tab. Here you select firefox.exe and click End Process.

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.
