The problem does not appear immidiately for me, but usually after I have been using the computer for some time, often with several applications open at the same time. Then the mouse get the problem that when I hoover on something, I do not get the "hand" any longer and therefore it is not possible to click on clickable text any longer unless I change window to something else and come back to the Firefox window again. Doing that procedure it is possible to click one time and then the mouse is "strange" again. It is not possible to solve by closing Firefos and opening it again, but only by restarting the computer. I hope that somebody might have a solution for this!!

Forgot to say that the problem is not connected to any specific pages.

I'm having the same problem. Here's my version info: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101203 Firefox/3.6.13 ( .NET CLR 3.5.30729)

For me, the problem starts most often after undocking my Dell laptop. Once it happens, it persists even when I close and re-open Firefox. After a reboot, everything is fine again. No other programs are affected. Specifically, Chrome and IE are still behaving normally.

Clicking the mouse doesn't do anything. I've seen it affect the menu bar, tool bar, address bar, links and other controls on the web page. It seems to affect either the page or the menu/address/tool bars, but not both at the same time.

While I'm typing this, I cannot use the mouse to move the cursor or edit any text in the edit box, but the key commands still work fine. Right now, mouse clicks on the page don't work and the cursor doesn't change when I roll it over a link, but the cursor changes when I move it over the address bar. Other times it is the opposite.

To get the mouse working again, the window has to lose focus. To me the easiest way is to press the Windows-key twice. After that, the mouse works again, sometimes for a little while, sometimes for just one click.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

See:

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.

  • Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
  • Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

Thanks for your response. I've started Firefox in Safe Mode and it made no difference. I've only had the default theme loaded, so there's nothing to change there. I've also changed my startup page to "Blank Page" to eliminate any page-related issues.

After starting Firefox in Safe Mode, I can mouse over all the controls, including the nonclient controls (Minimize, Maximize, Close buttons) on the window and all behave normally. I can mouse over the menu bar and the nonclient controls still respond to mouse-over.

After I open any menu on the menu bar, e.g. click on "File" twice so that the "File" menu appears and disappears again, the non-client controls stop responding to mouse events (mouse-over or click) and if I have a page loaded, all the links on the page stop responding as well, but the menu bar and toolbars are still working. Losing and restoring focus fixes it again.

If I have a page loaded and I first click on a page control after regaining focus (e.g. the text window that I use to enter this), any links and controls on the page are still working after that, but the menu bar, address/search bars, tool bar and nonclient controls are not responding to mouse events any more. I can still access the menu bar via keyboard shortcuts, but not via the mouse until Firefox loses and gets focus again.

I forgot to add that while clicking on "File" and then pressing ESC breaks the nonclient controls and the page controls, pressing Alt-F and then pressing ESC doesn't, so it seems like in this state, the first mouse click on either the application controls (menu bar/tool bar) or the page controls (links/buttons/edit boxes) locks all mouse events to that control group.

After getting focus, all controls respond to mouse-over events, then: - After clicking on the Firefox icon in the top-left corner (where the Move, minimize, Restore, etc controls are), page controls, nonclient controls and application controls still work. - After clicking on the application controls (menu bar, address bar, tool bar), the application controls still work, but the nonclient and page controls don't. - After clicking on any of the page controls (links, text boxes, etc), the page controls still work, but the nonclient and application controls don't.

I've followed the steps for Safe Mode and no success. I disabled all add-ons and still no change. The odd thing is, this started a few days after I downloaded the new version. It is quite aggravating!

HI, I have absolutely same problem as KingAragorn!

I have tried various suggestions from this page, but no luck! Anybody?

Or switch to other browser is the only options, but I do not want to switch as I have been enjoying the FF for the last 6 years.

But Firefox is rapidly slowing down in the last 2 years. Even worse, by not being able to click on items in FF it makes it unusable :(

Yeah this happens randomly occasionally with me. Laptop, touchpad, XP.

If I've got loads of applications / work open right pain to log off and log back on to fix it cos loose all my undo history.

Worked out you can navigate to your control panel using <CTRL><Escape> then arrows and <TAB> to go to your mouse settings. Go to Device Settings and Disable then Enable your pointing device and you get your mouse back.

I have the same issue. I have an HP laptop, and running latest version of Firefox. Every time a new page loads, or open a new tab, I cannot click any links. I change focus (I use Alt+TAB to do this quickly) to another application and go back, and it will work - for one more click.

I don't know if its related - but I also now have problems with Google Chrome (would be interested if anyone else experiencing this issue does as well? could they be related?). Clicking between tabs on Chrome closes them, and I can't click on the wrench icon to open options. I thought this combination of things meant something was wrong with my mouse driver - but I've done the 'middle click' fix for Chrome and all, and checked my drivers - it isn't that.

No progress or updates from anyone on this?

In case this helps anyone - I ended up solving my problem with this. It was to do with my mouse settings. I redownloaded latest drivers for my mouse (Microsoft Wireless) - and this didn't fix anything. I had configured my mouse wheel to be the middle mouse button. Once I still had the same problem, I opened my laptop (I use external monitors) and then pressed the actual middle mouse button on the laptop itself. This must have toggled something, because then Chrome and Firefox started behaving without that problem at all. What a waste of four hours!

Same problem here. Last weekend a complete re-install. W7-Ultimate-64 and Firefox 3.6.15

Whem I'm typing text in whatever what using Firefox every 10 or 15 letters focus is gone. Using a selectbox the box is closed and gone before I can make a selection. Being in a chat means openening random applications everytime I hit enter and typing in nowhere every few seconds.

It's that bad that I'm making this post using IE. Its unworkable. When there is no solution for this I'm forced to leave Firefox as my favorite browser.

I have the problem with mouse clicks in my e-mail. It doesn't happen immediately, but after opening a single e-mail, when I go back into e-mail to select for opening or deleting, Firefox will not respond to the mouse click. I have to exit out of Firefox and open it up again for the e-mail mouse clicks to be responsive. This has just started happening with the latest version of Firefox. Any help?
