My icons on google docs are invisible only in the firefox browser. If I mouse over their location then the words for the icon appear and I know where to click.

Can you log into another windows account and try the same steps? Do you have the same issue with Firefox in Safe Mode? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/diagnose-firefox-issues-using-troubleshoot-mode
