Why is the Preferences Window in Firefox 3.6.12 for Linux coming-up blank?
I just finished manually upgrading Firefox on an old machine running openSUSE 10.2; I decided against upgrading my OS because this is the only version in which my Olympus MAUSB-10 picture card reader works. In order to do this, I had to compile and install GLib 2.12 and ATK 1.32; all other dependancies were already included in this version of Linux. And I am currently running KDE, although GNOME is also installed. Firefox 2.0.0 is also installed on this machine.
Although the browser works fine from my home directory (I am using it right now to fill-out this form.), whenever I click on Edit and then Preferences, I find that this window comes-up blank. Could anyone please tell me how I might fix this problem?
Thanks in advance! ;)
Karl

Does the OpenSUSE distribution meet the Firefox requirements?

You may have a problem with the preferences file prefs.js.
See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

It was a profile problem; as soon as I added another profile to Firefox and made it the default, the problem went away.
Unfortunately, I could not uninstall Firefox 2.0, due to dependency-hell issues. Could it be that the default profile was for Firefox 2.0 (which came pre-installed in openSUSE 10.2), and was incompatible with my latest Firefox installation? And which is safer from a security perspective: keeping my Firefox installation within my home directory, or moving it to /usr/lib (i.e., where the older version is located)?
Thank you very much for your quick answer to my question, and for solving this issue! :)
