while reading an MSNBC or Fox News article (for example) from flipboard, suppose there is a video at the top of the article. But I don't want to watch that video... I just want to read the article that appears below it. So I start to scroll down, reading the article, and when the video scrolls off the screen at the top, a picture-in-picture with that video appears at the right side of the article, (sometimes blocking part of the article). If I had wanted to see the video, I would have watched the video! STOP these blasted picture-in-picure pop-ups.

Every time I look for help online, all I see is how to enable/disable the PIP controls, and no help on how to block PIPs themselves.

Sorry for the long post, but I don't know how else to describe the problem succinctly. Jerry (at wit's end)

Opening a fixed mini player automatically is a feature offered by the website and is created via JavaScript if the main player is scrolled out of view. A lot of websites now have a fixed (pop-up) mini player in one the corners once you start playing a video that stays visible if you scroll the page. This website mini player shouldn't be confused with the Firefox PiP (picture-in-picture) feature (you likely see the Firefox PiP icon if you hover the mini player).

You can look at these prefs in about:config to see what settings work for you to block autoplay.

  • media.autoplay.default = 5 [0:allow;1:blockAudible;5:blockAll]
  • media.autoplay.blocking_policy = 2
  • media.autoplay.allow-extension-background-pages => false
  • media.autoplay.block-event.enabled => true
  • media.block-autoplay-until-in-foreground

You can open about:config via the address/location bar. You can read the warning and click "Accept the Risk and Continue".

Can you confirm that this is a mini player added by the website ?

Can you attach a screenshot?

Can you post a link to a publicly accessible page (i.e. no authentication or signing on required)?

Sorry it took so long to get the screenshot. Here's the article I was looking at

https://www.foxbusiness.com/fox-news-food-drink/california-food-chains-laying-off-workers-ahead-new-minimum-wage-law?utm_source=flipboard&utm_content=FoxBusiness%2Fmagazine%2FLATEST%20STORIES

And, attached is the screen shot of the Picture-in-Picture that popped up. Jerry
