Unable to connect changes the location protocol to https. Can I turn this off?

I visit a website that hasn't upgraded to https yet. Whenever one of its pages times out (Firefox reports 'Unable to connect'), the location protocol changes from http to https. I suppose Firefox is trying to help me out by seeing if I typed in the wrong protocol.

This is annoying because I have to manually edit the address bar and remove the s from https and hit enter. I'd rather be able to refresh without thinking. Is there a way of turning this protocol changing functionality off?
