I am installing Firefox version 88.0 on an Ubuntu Linux version 15.04 system. Currently, I had, Firefox version 44.0. I am installing from the downloaded tar file as follows:

/home/paulr/firefox/firefox -ProfileBuilder

How do I recover my bookmarks and settings at this point ?

What happened is Firefox came up and asked me to sign in to my account. I didn't have one so I created one and am signed into it now. I don't have another Firefox account to sync with.

Safest to migrate a profile from an old Firefox version is installing this older version in your home directory and update via "Help -> About Firefox" until you reach the current release. There are some intermediate Firefox versions that have special migration code to make this work properly. Best would be to keep a copy of this old profile (~/.mozilla/firefox/) in case something goes wrong. Once you have updated properly then best is to create a new profile and transfer the migrated files to get rid of remnant files.

You can copy certain files with Firefox closed to the current profile folder to transfer or recover personal data. Note that best is to avoid copying a full profile folder.
