I very much would like to switch away from Safari to Firefox, due to a number of reasons. However, I find Firefox has a much higher CPU demand and that's a killer for me. Using latest version for all listed browsers in a MacBook Pro (i9, 16GB RAM), after opening CNN's website (also tried with other websites) and letting all browser just rest there, without interaction, I see this (CPU):

Firefox: 49.5% WindowServer: 26.4% Google Chrome: 16.1% Safari: 5.8% kernel_task: 4.6% (https://cln.sh/TQhV)

Is this normal or expected? (Firefox version is 76.0.1)

Hello Miguel, Firefox taking up more CPU than other Browsers is completely normal as Firefox has more privacy tools, etc. A lot of the times, it may be because of Add-ons so if you want a lower CPU, I would recommend removing the unnecessary extensions for a lower CPU percentage. Please tell me if that helped and, Stay Safe!

I wish it was it. It's a clean setup, with just one extension. Thanks!

No problem! I will try to find more ways to lower CPU in Firefox for you and as of again, Stay Safe!

Well, all I found was close unused tabs and more of that kind of not very effective stuff. Sorry I couldn't help out too much...

No problem. Thanks anyway.

I use this on chrome and firefox which lets me keep unused tabs open without them draining my ram like crazy: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ff-tab-suspender/

Could be helpful, but ultimately won't do anything about single websites hogging a lotta CPU :(
