Mouse-over of tool bar urls/icons produces only a black box without text.
The mouseover used to produce a box with text, but now there is only a black box. Running in SafeMode does not cure anything, so it apparently is not an add-on, as they are disabled. The bookmarks bar produces the same black box in SafeMode. This has been with Firefox for several releases now and this time, 53.0.3, even replacing the theme does not cure the thing.

I have a a couple installs of Firefox 53.0.2 which have themes that don't have this difficulty, so I can use them and avoid the update.
Currently, I have switched to Opera and will also examine Brave.
I think I'll just close this as I am giving away too much time looking for solution.

Is this happening on a Linux computer?
If that is the case then what Linux distribution do you use?
I use Ubuntu 1404, Ubuntu 16.o4, Debian 8, and CentOS 6.9 - and Firefox for the past several releases has the same issue on all the boxes. Currently, I am in Kubuntu14.04 with Firefox 53.0.3. I have been using Linux for decades - and never had this diffiuclty until a few releases back (firefox).
Now, even different themes will not display text on mouseover.
