I've tried every possible troubleshooting listed on mozilla support. I've tried taking down firewall, removing proxies, refreshing firefox, starting firefox in safe mode, virus scanning and removal, and on and on. Nothing works.

Is this with all sites, many, some, a few?

There is security software like Avast and Kaspersky and BitDefender and ESET that intercept secure connections and send their own certificate.

This occurs on any site that isn't https (I think that's the pattern). I had installed Avast a few days ago but it gave me so much trouble accessing websites that I deleted it. Are there Avast files, etc. possibly hidden on my computer somewhere that I am not aware of?

more options

I think I figured out the problem. I believe it was from the Avast software still being on my computer despite my deleting it. I was on a site trying to figure out how to get rid of Trovi adware (another problem I'm having) and discovered Avast "plist" files in my computer. The website is: http://macsecurity.net/view/57/ and the instructions that I used are: Quit all apps and press Command-Shift-G. Type ~/Library/Preferences and click Go. Move the file named com.apple.Safari.plist to trash and reboot the machine.

I unfortunately still have the adware/virus, but at least I can visit websites again!

I'm on a Windows. To remove a program, you need to run its uninstaller. I don't know about Mac's.

I ran the uninstaller but that still left some of the Avast program there. Now today I can't connect to http sites again.
