I am running firefox 26.0 on Windows 8.1 Whenever I try to start firefox it immediately crashes.

I've done a search but all the similar topics are too specific and don't seam to relate to my problem.

Hi,

1) Your crash reports are loading right now but while I'm waiting, Can you send me your troubleshooting information from the Firefox installation that's having issues? This is a good part in troubleshooting.

  • Navigate to about:support via Address Bar
  • Click the button that says Copy text to clipboard
  • Now, go back to your forum post and click inside the reply box. Press Ctrl+V to paste all the information you copied into the forum post.

Your crash reports just loaded and it looks like something from NVIDIA is causing the crash. Here's your crash signature:

2) Try to update your graphics card and disable hardware acceleration
Firefox has hardware acceleration set to "on" by default, but it's still young, which means some video cards or drivers might have problems with it. You can try to disable hardware acceleration to see if that alleviates your problems.

You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

Then perform these steps for Firefox version 29.0 and above:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu and select Options for Windows or Preferences on Mac or Linux. For Firefox 28.0 and previous versions, click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
  • In the Firefox options window, click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
  • In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
  • Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

If the suggestions I listed above don't work, please give me your troubleshooting information by using the information from the first step.

Can you try to start Firefox in Safe Mode to see if Firefox works properly with no error? You can start Firefox in Safe Mode below:

  • Windows/Mac: Go to Help > Restart with add-ons disabled
  • Linux: Run firefox -safe-mode in the Terminal/Konsole

Once you're in Safe Mode, can you give me your crash reports?

  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A Submitted Crash Reports list will appear, similar to the one shown below.
  2. Copy the 5 most recent Report IDs that start with bp- and paste them into your response here.

After you copy your crash reports, if Firefox opens up fine with no problems, it's probably one of your extensions that's causing the issue. You can re-enable your add-ons one by one until you find the one that causes the issue upon being re-enabled.

It runs in safe mode. I disabled all my extensions and plugins, however it still crashes when I start it normally.
