Version 4.0.1 My history settings are set to "use custom settings for histoy", and I cannot change it to just "remember histoy". Ever time I set it to "remember history", close it, it's still set to "use custom settings for history".

You don't have Permanent Private Browsing mode selected, do you?

Only if all History settings are default then you see "Firefox will: (Never) Remember History".

You see "Use custom settings for history" if at least one of the History or Cookie settings is not the default to make you aware that you made changes.
