v 149 no longer allows browser links to be dragged to an email or doc
I see many complaints about this new version v 149 for the Mac. The most outrageous one is that you can no longer drag links from a browser page (try BBC) to an email or a doc. You have to copy the link then it won't turn blue and only when received will it show up as a link. Like many others after 30 years use preferred over Safari and others I am seriously losing patience with Firefox. On the very day you announce split screen for Ff windows - you disable a vital feature that has worked for years causing me to waste so far 60 minutes of my hard pressed work time. Maybe this will be corrected in the next upgrade. But I am now intending to avoid all Firefox upgrades for 6 months after being offered. I doubt anyone on this forum will come back on this but my set-up is Mac OS Monterey - and Firefox v 148 worked perfectly before today. I hesitate to try and install the previous version because I am not used to doing such tech moves. Perhaps someone in the Mozilla head office congratulating themselves on the marvellous new upgrade will come across this but I doubt it

Hi,
The people who answer questions here, for the most part, are other users volunteering their time (like me), not Mozilla employees or developers. When a Mozilla employee jumps into a discussion, you'll see the Mozilla Staff label next to their name.
If you wish, you can leave feedback for developers on the Mozilla Connect website. Click the Firefox Menu
button in the toolbar, click Help and select Share ideas and feedback…. Alternatively, you can use this link. Your feedback is collected by a team that reads it and gathers data on the most common issues.
You can also file a bug report or feature request. See File a bug report or feature request for Mozilla products for details.
Many thanks Paul for your very prompt response. I will follows the links you suggest. But my main point remains - before Mozilla developers send an upgrade I like to feel that there is a back compatible list of basic essential actions they consult and test. Or at least a link to possible incompatibities for basic browser actions. Many thanks again. PS Would love to see a Mozilla Staff pick up on this - and on why keeping Firefox loyal users means checking on back compatible issues. Firefox holds a relatively small share of the global browser market - as low as 2.5% ! It has a stronger presence on desktop . Anton
Thank you for your feedback.
I have found out that Firefox has decided to only allow URLs to be dragged into an email if they are copied and pasted as a quotation. Took me several days to work that out . It is the first time with decades of using Firefox that such an issue has caused me a lot of headache and wasted time.
At the same time on the rare occasion I had to upload a short video I discovered that Firefox is not good at all at this compared to Chrome
I cannot see why Version 150 did not correct the 'dragging links issue'. But it seems they do not care about such details for those of us who work daily with links and email.
I am seriously thinking of switching to Chrome Anton
Hi Anton.
Thank you for your feedback. The feedback site that I mentioned earlier would be the better place to share this.
Navigation in forums is a bit of a nightmare for those of us not used to forums - for instance where on this page do I post the feedback ? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/access-mozilla-services-firefox-account
Notice I had to copy the page link but this time there was no option to do so as a Quotation - maybe it will turn to blue after I have posted. Used to be quite easy in the 1990s
Anton
PS I reckon this change in Firefox v 149 has taken 4 hours out of my time.
Thank you again for your feedback.
I'm admittedly using newer versions than the ones posted, but I don't see any inability to drag BBC links to either documents, or another tabs with content editors on macOS: (The posts above already include instructions where to file a bug in case this warrants further investigation et al.)
Paul I did eventually locate the Mozilla Connect page then it asks me to "login to continue to SSO" but when I enter the 8 digit password it rejects it. I then tried entering my username (above) ad16. No response. These are the only security details I have for Mozilla. And if I am already logged in to write this note why does it need my PW anyhow, And 'continue with LDAP (internal) ' What does that mean ? It only convinces me people not used to Forums are not given the complex skills to post Feedback on Mozilla Connect. And of course there is not much likelihood that my issue will be taken note of let alone resolved. Having to copy links then paste as a Quotation is incredibly time consuming. I have been using Firefox since 2004 in preference as a Mac user to Safari. It seems loyalty does no count. Would You be kind enough to post the query for me. As an 80 year old user I dont think I can manage to do it myself. Also since you are a high level contributor they may take some notice of you. Please Anton
Hi, regarding your Connect issue, you need to click "Continue with Mozilla Accounts", and then enter your email and password.
I was about to congratulate Mozilla for correcting in v 152 an issue I posted.
I saw this said FIXED:
Improved dragging images from Firefox to the desktop or Finder on macOS — images now save reliably and land where you drop them.
THIS IS UNTRUE - I restarted Firefox v 152 to make sure - but the same problem introduced by v 149 is STILL THERE - you cannot drag a LINK into an email (Macmail v 16.0)
This means you have to copy and paste as Quotation the link - which takes up valuable time if you are sending links throughout the day.
Thanks to Denys, jbr and Paul - but NO ONE HAS LISTENED
All that hoorah publicity on new features in v 152 and Firefox cannot correct a simple fault
So unless I get a change I am planing on moving to Safari
However the advice given to stop Firefox over heating my mac while using AI has worked - The issue of overheating caused by Firefox using AI simply does not occur on Safari
Anton
One other issue when I bookmark a page in v 151 to 152 no window opens to ask you to name the mark or where to assign it. That was always there for 20 years and has now vanished. You have no visual evidence the bookmark has been saved and certainly let's say you gave two or three bookmark folders you have no idea which folder it went to.
One more it is the basic things that work for years and now fail that upset you the most
Anton
I'm pretty certain the changelog mentions saving picture files/attachments to desktop, which is unrelated to dragging hypermedia links to other apps, at least as far as I remember from glancing the changeset.
There are definitely clusters of bugs around rich–text and media drag&drop known compatibility issues, but these have all been somehow reproduced first. I tried with the examples you provided and was not able to reproduce — and have not heard back if I'm doing something wrong. Now reading "Macmail v 16.0" I'm wondering if that might be system–specific, by that you perhaps mean dragging into native Apple Mail running on macOS Ventura? Can you provide the exact versions of both the system and the mail client, to be sure? Thanks.
Jbr - many thanks for your prompt reply.
From what you say my problem is still staying on Mac OS 12.7.6 Monterey - but that is still Mac Mail 16.0 - see this : Version 16.0 (3696.120.41.1.10)
I am sure you are right on drag and drop compatability issues - my knowledge of such things is zero. But for a browser that has an insignificant share of the market and therefore probably a loyal user base surely the one thing Firefox should do I make sure within reason basic functions are preserved or in Preferences there is an option to circumvent advanced issues.
Firefox holds a 2.19% share of the worldwide browser market across all devices.
That using AI on Firefox heats mac devices is uncontestable so perhaps this AI back up means Firefox is aiming for a niche advanced user market - in which case I am off. Thanks so much for your input Anton
I have double checked on Safari Version 17.6 (17618.3.11.11.7, 17618) and to the immediate left of the webpage name is an icon which allows you to drag a link into an email easily - as used to be the case for 20 years before Firefox v 149
I have also double checked on Chrome v 149 and dragging a link from there to an email is also easy
How obstinate of Mozilla to choose a quite separate option
Anton
The only recent drag&drop change was in v150.0 so that's not overlapping with your report, and was from as you say "Mozilla to choose a quite separate option" from decades ago to simple generic method for functionality universally the same as anyone else. (Notably, that was for dropping things onto Firefox, not getting content out of it.)
I don't currently have access to Monterey but tested on Sonoma using Apple Mail version 16.0 (3826.700.81.1.6) and it appears working as expected: (GIF recording attached)
Thanks Jbr for all the research you have done
I think Sonoma was 2023 - so Monterey is way behind that. I will be purchasing a M4 Mac mini next year and then will of course be able to do Sonoma and Tahoe My point remains that Firefox with such a niche audience should ensure basic functions should be backwards compatible. Clearly the Mozilla developers take a very different point of view.
Then there is the no bookmarks save pop up issue - and then the AI overheating effect - so I'm afraid it is just a matter of time before I jump to Safari.
thanks again Anton
