Error Message-can not send email due to STARTTLS?
9/10/2025 After trying to send an email I got the following message. Repeatedly. Called Sitestar's tech support and they tried to fix the issue. Here is the first error message.
Sending of the message failed.
An error occurred while sending mail: Unable to establish a secure link with Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.sitestar.net using STARTTLS since it doesn't advertise that feature. Switch off STARTTLS for that server or contact your service provider.
Sitestar Tech support had me go to account settings, to outgoing server to edit and change the STARTTLS to SSL/TS port and retry sending the test email. Then got this error message:
Sending of the message failed. An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: H:RB [172.56.209.199] Connection refused due to abuse. Please contact your E-mail provider.. Please verify that your email address is correct in your account settings and try again.
Went back to set up and original error message still shows up and email can not be sent. Any ideas how to fix this. I can still send email thru the sitestar website, but not from my laptop. I think I used up all the Site star tech supports brain cells. I use the latest thunderbird. We connect to the internet via a T-mobile tower thing. Windows 11 Thank you

All your issues are about your provider. They have now blocked your account. I have no idea why you are setting anything up. They told you what to do, you did it and now they have blocked your account. What is the next step they suggest . Not contacting anyone about Thunderbird as the fix has to come from them.
Basically sitestar have blocked your IP address for to many failed attempts to send your mail.
Thannk you from this old ladies heart. Contacting Sitestar this morning, the provider of the email I use, now. Waiting to hear from them. I will let you know the results. Thank you so much for responding.
Contacted Sitestar this morning. After several hours of tests, including being able to send mail thru their webmail site and also being able to send mail from my gmail account, they determined that the issue was a Thunderbird issue and I needed 'email app support'. Whether or not this is true will be determined in the future.
So the good news is that I have still 2 ways to send out email, which is not very often, although replying to an email does not work either.
The option is to uninstall my adorable Thunderbird program and reinstall, but unfortunately when I did that years ago, I lost all my contacts and folders. So I am either going to have to hire someone to do that for me, look on youtube for how to do that, get another email program like Outlook, which I prefer not to do, or just leave it alone.
So I am humorously caught in a loop of A says B did it and B says A did it. If you have any other suggestions, I am very happy to receive. I do make my yearly donation to Thunderbird as I appreciate the work everyone does. So maybe that good karma will come around.
The recommended settings are:
mail.sitestar.net, port 465, SSL/TLS security, authentication = normal password, User Name = email address
If you have that and still get the 'abuse' error, the only remedy is to ask Sitestar to unblock your account.
I finally gave up trying to get Sitestar to unblock the account and just waited for a while. One day I forgot I could not send outan email and sent a reply to someone and it went thru. It appears to have fixed itself. I have yet to initiate an email to see if that gets sent out, so we will see what happens then. Thanks for your reply. I am keeping it just in case this happens again.
