Early this morning, the Play Store notified me there was an update for Firefox. I went to my Play Store account and downloaded the new update. After the download, I tried opening Firefox by tapping on the icon. Firefox tried to open but immediately closed. This keeps happening, even now. I did get one message from my phone saying "this version of Firefox is not compatible with your phone". Never had any problems like this before.

Hi

What is the make and model of your Android device? What version number of Android is installed on it?

My phone is a Moto G Stylus 5G (2024 Edition) It is running an Android Version 14. I've attached a screenshot of the particular other numbers and info I think you might be looking for. If you need something different, let me know. Thank you, Steve Cripe

Additional info for Mozilla:

I received an email from you today saying that the issue I reported to you, you really couldn't work on because you "only work with the mobile app for Firefox". If you had read my issue, not to mention that I was asked which version of Android I was running, this should have confirmed that it was the mobile or Android version of Firefox I had been talking about and the issue was on my phone app of Firefox. I've used Firefox for years on my phone with no issues like this. Ever since I downloaded the latest update for my Firefox browser, when I try to open the browser, it immediately closes. This happens over and over. The first time I tried to open it after installing the update from the Play Store, I received a message on my phone screen saying "this app version will not work on your phone". (I have a Moto G Stylus 5G, 2024 edition, with Android 14.) Still no resolution from Mozilla. If I could just get all my Bookmarks, Saved Websites, and Collections, I would install a different browser and install my Bookmarks, Websites and Collections on the new browser. Those saved items are very important to me and I don't want to lose them. As it is, I can't get the Firefox browser to stay open long enough to get access to my saved information. Oh and all my other apps and software are working just fine on my phone in case you thought it was going to be a phone issue. Can I roll back to the previous version that worked just fine or other suggestions?

I am sorry, but I do not understand your reference to an email.

Please can you open the Android Settings app, select Apps then find Firefox in the list. In the section titled Storage and Cache, select the option to clear the cache (do not clear data!) and restart your Android device.

Does this help?

Paul, I cleared my cache when I first started having issues after I installed the latest download. It made no difference.

I received an email response from the developer, via the Google Play Store, apparently at Mozilla. Here's the answer I received from them on 08/28:

"Developer response: We apologize for the inconvenience you experienced with the app. While we primarily support mobile devices, we cannot guarantee compatibility with your specific device: http://mzl.la/14wAMgM. For better assistance in resolving this issue, please submit your report here: https://mzl.la/AndroidSupport"

Thank you.

Paul, I understand you've closed this issue out. I just got done submitting new information here as I have heard nothing from Mozilla. You are the only one who has asked me one question. I just submitted the following:

I decided this morning, since I have gotten no help from Mozilla or anyone else, to uninstall the Firefox browser I had on my phone that was giving me the problem of opening then immediately closing itself. So I uninstalled it, rebooted my phone and went to the Play Store and installed a fresh version of Firefox for Android.

After the install, I immediately got a message on my phone screen saying that: "This app isn't compatible with the latest version of Android. Check for an update or contact the apps developer."

And this fresh install will open but closes itself immediately, as has been the issue all along since I first notified you.

The Play Store claims this app "is compatible with your phone, the Moto G Stylus 5G (2024)".

It also claims "the required OS is Android 5.0 and higher".

Note that I'm running Android v.14.

So, since there is no update indicated by the Play Store, I am now notifying the developer.

Please advise.

The only time I received that message that I quoted in my previous message was when I re-installed a fresh Firefox for Android from the Play Store. The first time I tried to open the new copy of the app, I received the message. I can not get it to come up now because the app opens and closes itself so quickly that the message doesn't show. I would have to uninstall the app and probably try reinstalling it again. And then when I first try to open it, I might get that message on my phone screen. If you want me to do that, let me know. But the message said exactly what I quoted on my previous message here.

Well isn't this interesting. In the Play Store, if you search for Firefox browser, you'll get 5 or 6 different titles for the Firefox browser. I had been using and downloaded the "Firefox for Android". But this is the one I've been having issues with. Today, I uninstalled the Firefox browser that wouldn't stay open until wasn't functional. And in the Play Store I found a title for "Firefox for Android Phone"; they added a description with the addition of the word "phone". So I tried that one. Downloaded it and it opens, stays open and I was able to sign in to my account for Firefox. We'll see if it lasts and stays functional.

The official Mozilla app is called "Firefox Fast & Private Browser". What is the title of the Google Play store listing of the app that you have installed?

As noted by my quote, when you search, the Play Store lists it as "Firefox for Android". But depending on what "words" you use to search, you'll get different named results for Firefox from the Play Store. My one screenshot shows what I originally downloaded, "Firefox for Android", was the one that gave me the app that wouldn't stay open and gave me the error message. But in the next screenshot, today I downloaded the one called "Firefox for Android Phone", and it works fine, so far. Kind of misleading on the part of the Play Store or whoever decides on the search names. (Note that I meant to say that Mozilla defaults to using Chrome as the search browser, but you can change it.) So who knows why the "Firefox for Android" wouldn't work correctly, but the "Firefox for Android Phone" works fine.

Firefox for Android should not send searches to Chrome by default.

Are you able to attach a screenshot of the Google Play store page you downloaded Firefox from?
