When you add the e-mail all works correct but you need to verify and sign-in into you google account, so thunderbird opens his integrated browser, but that browser seems to be very old or not supported. So it is impossible to add your Gmail account to thunderbird.

In addition to Matt's question..............What browser do you use and what version?

The most recent Mozilla Firefox version is 90.0 Try installing that version, set as default and report back on results.

I'm going to try a beta version. The 90.0b3.


[A few minutes later] It doesn't work , the problem is the embed-browser.

At the moment I'm using Mozilla Firefox version 90.0.
