I would like to know how to get rid of the crappy download panel when downloading an item. It serves no worthwhile purpose other than to irritate.

Hi WAArnold,

Just got to Tools > Options > General. There is a checkbox in there for showing the downloads window or not. Take a look at the Startup, home page, tabs, and download settings Knowledge Base article for details.
