I have a massive collection of bookmarks that are not organized. How can I search the bookmarks for text likely to be in the website I want?

Often I wish to revisit a site I found previously, but I only remember some content details.

I wish to confine a search to 1) only sites I have bookmarked in the past. And then, if that didn't work, 2) I wish to search sites in my history

I'm lazy and don't want to have to have tagged or organized in a certain way

is there presently a way to do this? Help provided no help on this.

Have you tried using the location bar? It checks both page titles and URLs in bookmarks and history (you can set it to bookmarks only, history only, both bookmarks and history, or no search).

If the information you want to search isn't in the title or URL, you might be out of luck.

One other thing you might try would be to export your bookmarks to an HTML file and open that as a web page in Firefox. (Exporting bookmarks to an HTML file | How to | Firefox Help) You then could search on the page (titles) or in the page source (right-click, View Page Source).

I don't think there is a similar feature for exporting history. But there might be an add-on...

I went to the location bar, but saw no way to confine its search to my bookmarks. I looked at help for the location bar, and also found nothing that would allow me to confine it. Are you talking about some kind of change in the settings for firefox that I would need to change for my search, then change back when I was finished?

Yes, the setting is here:

orange Firefox button or Tools menu > Options > Privacy

At the bottom is the drop-down that sets what gets suggested when you start typing in the location bar (address box). You don't have to change it back if you only want to see bookmarks suggested.

If you need a faster way to switch it, I wouldn't be surprised if someone created an add-on that would go on the navigation toolbar right next to the address box...

I didn't realize it was searching my history and bookmarks by default. If it is listing bookmarks first, then history after that I guess it is doing what I was after (I just didn't realize it) It would be nice if there was some visual indication that a site was previously bookmarked, like a bookmark symbol or something. This would tell me the site had something I was looking for on it.

The transparent star icon should turn yellow for bookmarks.
