How can I avoid installation of updates preventing FF from starting?

Message says "Installing updates, will start in a moment". This is followed by: " Cannot install updates. Please close other copies of FF running". If no other copies running, a loop occurs which cannot be cleared. Attempting to re-install FF3.6.6 is also blocked.
