Can't complete installation on new Windows 11 laptop: What is my "email account password"?

Don Lenovo

I downloaded Thunderbird on my new Windows 11 laptop and began setup by entering my full name and email address ([redacted]@utexas.edu, operated by Gmail). The next screen asks for my "email account password." I entered my Google password that allows me to access my email at Gmail (https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox). But "Authentication failed," and I am stuck! I cannot finish installing Thunderbird. I have used Thunderbird for many years on my prior laptop (Windows 10).

I have not idea why you posted an image of a blank screen, but I think I am with the issue as Google required oauth authentication not your password.

But I looked at the utexas web and they are talking exclusively office365. https://tech.utexas.edu/initiatives/official-student-email so I am now wondering if you are conflating the provider from the past with newer requirements. I think I am now confused. Could you please clarify.

Matt, thank you for your effort. I posted the "blank screen," because it shows that Thunderbird is asking me for my "email account password." Lack of that password is what is preventing me from finishing the Thunderbird installation. That password is what I need help with. What could it be besides the Google password (Google calls it a "password") that gives me full Web access to my email account that I've had for many years, [redacted]@utexas.edu. I am retired from the University, not a student affected by the 2025 email policy you cite. Do you have any idea about how to find the password that Thunderbird is asking for?

Now a few days later, I think my title question should be changed to: Why does Thunderbird setup not recognize my email account password? Can Thunderbird overcome this barrier to my setting up Thunderbird?

Well, the issue is that Thunderbird is just a tool. It takes the account settings you provide and then sends that info to the server you provided, and the server replies that there is something wrong.

Thanks, David. Might things be more complex than you suggest? For example, Matt suggested here a few years ago that an antivirus app might interfere with Thunderbird setup. (I haven't installed an antivirus yet on my new Windows 11 computer.) As for your mentioned "account settings that you provide," I think I provided only two settings: 1. My full name with middle initial, same as on my Gmail web access page. 2. My email account password that logs me into my Gmail web access page. I don't understand how there could be "something wrong" here. If there is not some other factor preventing my Thunderbird setup, and it cannot be discovered, then I will not be able to use Thunderbird on my new computer. That would be sad, as I have appreciated Thunderbird going back 20 years when I was using Eudora from Qualcomm (taken over by Thunderbird). ( I have also donated to support Thunderbird, including with my recent download.).

First, I defer to Matt in all things Thunderbird. My point was that thunderbird is but the tool. My inference is that you do not have a generic Gmail account, but one administered by a separate entity. My view of thunderbird is that it is a stupid client — which is what we want. It takes the setup as provided and tries to use it. If there is an error message, it stops. I will bow out of this, but I do encourage reviewing your settings with the university.
