Notification: What Does "Inotify initialization error" Mean?

Alan

Hello,

Every now and then Thunderbird pops up the notification in the screenshot. Can anyone tell me what it means and if I should do anything about it?

Lin,

"you might try contacting Claranet in case they're not yet aware"

Thanks, I'll do that this evening,

Alan.

What is your operating system?

This is a Linux operating system error indicating that there may be a problem with the file system. I don't understand it well enough to know if it's from your local computer or from the mail server, but in either case the error is being passed on to you by Thunderbird, but it's not a Thunderbird error.

Lin,

Thanks for identifying the message.

That is very strange, I'm running Windows 11 Pro 25H2. I don't have a dual boot or a virtual machine, in fact I don't have anything Linux. Maybe it originated on Claranet's mail server?

Alan.

In that case, the error message is generated by the email server indicating a problem on their end. I imagine you aren't the only one being affected by this and they may already be working on it, but you might try contacting Claranet in case they're not yet aware.

OK, I reported the notification to Claranet's exasperating support department and they sent me instructions for installing a Gmail account. I protested and they sent me the following:

Senior engineers have reviewed this issue and have advised that this error will not be originating from our servers. It is most likely being generated by your mail application. No other Claranet users have reported this error. Unfortunately there is no further action Claranet can take regarding this issue. ''''''''''

Interesting. inotify is a Linux feature that monitors certain file system errors. But Windows has no such feature or program, so it cannot have any relevance to your local system. If you google "inotify initialization error" you'll find lots of discussions about it, many having to do with mail servers, so apparently it's a common configuration issue.

I guess the message you're seeing doesn't necessarily say that there's a problem with the server's file system, only that its monitoring system is unable to start. This is usually a configuration issue on their end. There's nothing you can do about it - it's out of your control.

I'm glad you contacted them, even though they thoroughly dismissed your concern. I hope one of their "senior engineers" will reconsider and fix it before their server potentially crashes.

I don't like to gloat but a crash would be funny.
