When I send an email using Thunderbird, strange characters (like ?? or &&) show up after the ends of all my sentences. How can I stop this from happening?

When I send emails using Thunderbird, strange characters (like ?? or &&) show up after the ends of all my sentences. Like: "Let's meet at 1:00 pm for lunch."??"Let's try The Blue Spoon."??

This is annoying and not professional looking. How do I get the unnecessary characters to stop showing up in my sent emails?
