When I click 'get messages' then deal with and delete messages then click 'get messages ' again I get all the messages again, not just new ones and I want to know how to on ly get messages once

I have had my computer 'cleaned' by a friend and when I click 'get messages', then deal with and delete messages, then later in the day click 'get messages' again I receive all the messages I had previously dealt with, not just any new messages and I want to know how to stop this happening so that I only receive each email once,

In Account Settings - Server Settings for an account, do you have "Leave messages on server" checked? If so, uncheck that item.
