Sorry about that, but that type of data loss as a result Firefox not being closed cleanly seems to happen less often in newer versions of Firefox. Firefox 28 hasn't been supported in a few years now, you should update to the latest version of Firefox, as long as your WinXP has at least SP2.

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/fx/#desktop or https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/

FF29 and later versions don't run well. Too many frozen pages and closings without warnings.

Short of a new PC, the best suggestion I have is an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to keep your PC running long enough when the power fails to allow you to shut down Firefox and your operating system properly. I have been using a UPS for my PC's since the mid-1980's; first for my business, and now that I am retired for my home PC's.

As helpful as these suggestions might be for the future, Ed, neither answer my question.

On more recent Windows versions you might have a copy of places.sqlite (stores bookmarks and history) available via restore previous version, but Windows XP doesn't include this feature.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks, history) in the Firefox profile folder.

If I'm understanding the information at these links properly, I can't use the add-on because of my old OS and/or FF. In the other link, it looks like I would have to have a recent profile back-up to replace the damaged places.sqlite file. I don't see in the article is this is done automatically, and I have recent back-up, or if I have to do it manually, I don't have one. For the back-up to contain the actual history, it would have to be no more than a day old. How do I find this out?

You can get an older version of Places Maintenance here - look at the Works with ...' description line to see what Firefox version each older PM version supports, https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/versions/

But due to using that old version of Firefox 28 AND due to using WinXP, your chances of recovering your browsing history is slim. And without a backup of the session data file = session.bak, you aren't going to get the failed session back. Firefox backs up Bookmarks, but not Browsing History. Newer Firefox versions do backup "sessions" separately. WinXP doesn't have "restoration points" as newer Windows OS versions have.

Thanks, Ed. That's what I figured. I've found FF instructions lacking in detail a lot of times I need help, and I wanted to make sure I was understanding what I read this time correctly.
