38.2 frequently (daily) hangs. The only button that works is the X to close the app. I have to restart it each time it hangs. I've restarted in safe mode and disabled all add ons. Still hangs

Hello

Sorry to hear about this issue. Please Update Firefox to the latest release and try again then let us know if there's no change.

There's been a bunch of changes from your current version to the latest version that you may want to take advantage of.

-Michael

To clarify, the issue is with TB not FF. I checked FF anyway and it is up to date. 40.0.3

Sorry for the confusion. This could be due to a corrupt msf file in the TB profile. Please check this article for instructions on how you can fix this.

What is your anti-virus software?

I tried the Thunderfix solution. So far, so good. Wait and see a day or two.

I couldn't find the msf files anywhere. Does anyone know the path? Are they hidden files?

FWIW I'm using W10.

TB locked up again. I had to shutdown the app and restart it to red email. This is after I tried Thunderfix. Any ideas?

John

I'm running W10. I searched and don't see how to start W10 in safe mode. I didn't have this problem with the previous release of TB. Only since 38.2 came out. - I have started TB in safe mode on a couple of occasions now, and TB works fine...for awhile. The problem keeps coming back in a day or two. Today I checked 'About' to see if there was a new release and that pop-up froze. - Does TB stay in safe mode after putting my PC to sleep? I wonder if bringing it out of sleep does something to TB...I don't typically restart my PC for a couple weeks at a time.

Thanks! Glad to see I wasn't the only one.

Please update to version 38.3.0 which is out today. Will probably fix your problem.

Is it better?

Updated to 38.3 on Tues night. So far so good. Thanks!

I am running the latest TB (version 38.6) and am having the same problem after upgrading my PC to Windows 10. TB still works, but every now and then it hangs for up to 20-30 seconds before completing a task. This happens with different tasks and does not seem to be related to a specific task. Any solutions to this?

Start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled - win10 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/change-startup-settings-in-windows-10 Still In Windows safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode - http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/safe-mode

Does problem go away?

I have followd your suggestions and so far (after 3 hours) everything is fine, although I hate working in safe mode....I'll let it ride for a couple of days without shutting down the PC to see if it keeps running OK. If it does, then obviously something else on the computer is causing the problem...the question is how to locate the problem

2 days of working on a PC with no apps is no joke...however, it proved something, as Thunderbird worked fine for the whole period. There are 2 options - either an add on in TB is causing the problem or one of the PC apps. I don't think it would be one of the TB apps as I haven't added any since upgrading to Windows 10 and it worked fine on Windows 7, so the problem must be with one of the apps on Windows 10, probably something built in with the installation. Any suggestions where to start looking?

OK

- (still in Windows safe mode) ... start Thunderbird normally (not in TB safe mode)

-- If problem is still gone, then cause is a program loaded during Windows startup. Possibilities include: antivirus SW, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates

-- If problem is NOT gone, then cause is likely a Thunderbird addon - eliminate them by disabling each one at a time in Tools | addons | extensions and restarting

- If results are unclear ... possibilities include temporary conditions such as contention from other running programs, downloads related to windows update, ...

Please let us know your findings.

I'm getting lost here...its definitely not an add-on in Thunderbird as I disabled them all and still had the same problem. The question is where do I look now. I disabled the anti virus and the problem didn't disappear. I can live with it as it just causes a delay every now and then when TB hangs for up to a minute, but it's still annoying. There are so many other things running on the PC and I'm not even sure how to enable them one at a time. I found that when I am in safe mode on Windows 10 it won't let me turn on individual software even if I want to !

> disabled them all and still had the same problem.

Disabling all addons is not quite the same as running thunderbird in safe mode.

But, it does sound like something loaded during Windows startup is cuaing your issue. And most likely it is antivirus software.
