When I send an email the box doesn't close property it says it is saving it to sent which it does but the box doesn't close and I have to quit thunderbird in order to continue

When I send a message the send box does not close. It remains open and says it is saving the message in the sent folder. I then have to quit thunderbird in order to close the box and get back to using thunderbird again. It does save it in the sent folder. but the box remains open Why is it doing this?
