We recommend keeping automatic updates enabled for all Firefox deployments to ensure that the latest security patches are applied and all features are available, but your specific environment may prevent automatic updates.
Both Firefox and Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR) can be used in your Enterprise environments. If you're concerned about frequent large updates, we recommend reading Choose a Firefox update channel to learn more about Firefox ESR.
Firefox receives a major update every two weeks, incorporating new features and bug fixes from that period, with minor updates between major releases as needed to address critical stability or security issues.
Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR) receives a major update every year, incorporating new features and bug fixes from the previous 12 months, with minor updates every two weeks or as needed to address critical stability or security issues.
Deploy Firefox and manage updates
Organizations can use device management tools, including mobile device management (MDM) solutions such as Microsoft Intune or Jamf, to deploy Firefox and manage updates across computers in their organization.
Firefox enterprise policies control how Firefox updates itself, including whether automatic updates are enabled. However, some organizations manage application updates through their own deployment tools instead. In these cases, administrators may need to distribute Firefox updates using their device management software.
For more information about deploying Firefox in your organization, see Deploy Firefox in the Firefox Enterprise documentation.
Control updates through policies
You can control your updates through policies. These policies allow you to manage Firefox's built-in update behavior, including automatic and manual updates.
Check out the policies you can use below:
- DisableAppUpdate: Turn off application updates within Firefox.
- AppAutoUpdate: Enable or disable automatic application update.
- BackgroundAppUpdate: Enable or disable automatic application update in the background, when the application is not running.
- ManualAppUpdateOnly: Switch to manual updates only.
- AppUpdatePin: Prevent Firefox from being updated beyond the specified pinned version.
- AppUpdateURL: Change the URL for application update if you are providing Firefox updates from a custom update server.
For instructions on setting up enterprise policies, see Policy configuration.
Manage releases with Firefox Enterprise
The Firefox Enterprise console also includes release management options that help administrators decide how and when Firefox updates are deployed in their organization.
For more information, see the Firefox for Enterprise page.
Troubleshoot Firefox update issues
If Firefox doesn't update as expected, troubleshooting steps can vary depending on your operating system and how Firefox is managed in your organization.
For Windows-specific update issues, see Troubleshoot Firefox updates on Windows.
