Insert>Link in 31.1.0 wants you to insert a file, does not let you paste the URL anymore.

Windows 7. Thunderbird 31.1.0. (Sept 2014). I am trying to use the Insert> Link feature. Tbird 31.1 does not let me paste the copied URL. Instead, the following error message appears: "no named anchors or headings in this page". I can type the URL into the box but that is not the way it is supposed to work.
