Thunderbird keeps inappropriately bringing up UAC
I have Thunderbird installed for lots of users on windows 11. Recent updates caused Thunderbird to ask again to set as default, as is normal. However, if you ask it to set as default it brings up a UAC dialog. However, I have installed as a user, and am asking to change a user setting. UAC is inappropriate for the situation.
If I ask Thunderbird to uninstall is again pops up a UAC dialog even though it is not necessary and inappropriate.
Why is Thunderbird asking for more permissions?
I installed as the current user with default installer settings.

This appears to be a Windows issue, not a Thunderbird one. Thunderbird was developed to be indifferent from the OS. I suggest trying on a Windows forum for more insight. Thank you.
Thanks for the reply.
Since i am asking about interacting with the security systems in windows it CAN NOT be indifferent to the OS as Windows permissions are fundamentally different to other OS permissions.
I know for a fact you CAN install user apps in %appdata%, update them, set a new version as the default, and not get a UAC prompt. I know it is possible.
Does anyone know why I get a UAC prompt when you ask to set Thunderbird as the default email program? Does anyone else feel this is bad form? Should I open a bug report?
No disagreement here, but I have never seen a UAC prompt for Thunderbird. You're welcome to file a bug report, but there must be something unique in your configuration that would be needed, I believe, for the developers to identify the issue. We're just volunteers here.
Interesting. One of the first thing that happens when you double click the Thunderbird .exe installer, even on a brand new laptop, is a UAC prompt. By default Thunderbird tries to install for all users. That always requires a UAC prompt unless you have it disabled. Is it possible you have UAC disabled?
I will test on a clean install to verify that it is not my configuration, but I am pretty sure it is not.
Does anyone get a UAC prompt when you ask to uninstall a current user copy of Thunderbird or to re-set Thunderbird as your default mail app after an update?
