I get the message: Unable to write the email to the mailbox. Make sure the file system allows you write privileges, and you have enough disk space to copy the mailbox.

do you have a third party anti virus program? That sounds like the sort of issue that arises when it is scanning your inbox while Thunderbird is trying to write to it.
