I have been struggling with this for months. I really like Thunderbird but I have tried everything. Receiving emails works fine, it is just the SMTP that hangs. I will have to abandon this and go to outlook if I cant resolve. It Does eventually go but it takes a couple tries. The examples given, I resent and it was fine.

I got It FIXED!!! All things setup properly as suggested (Thanks) So In AVAST! in you can tell it to not scan outgoing email. So Avast!>Menu Settings>Protection> Core Shields>Mail Shield>un-tick "Scan Outbound emails STMP".

This fixed the problem with avast!.

Thanks again

Try it with Avast removed (not just disabled) or with Windows running in safe mode, to bypass startup apps like Avast. Check that the smtp.office365.com authentication is OAuth2, like the incoming.
