"Unable to login at server" On fresh install of Thunderbird 78 on multiple mail accounts

I've today set up a new pc and was going to set up my email. I use two accounts, one on GMX, the other on gmail, though thunderbird gives me the "unable to login at server" for both accounts, even though I verified that username/password are correct, and it correctly found the settings for the email servers. I've used thunderbird just fine the other day, albeit an older version on my previous PC, and I'm absolutely clueless as to what is causing /none/ of my email login attempts to work.

It's a clean install, and the only security measures are the default windows one as well as avast premium. Are there any settings that are required to make this work?

I have had a similar problem, turn off avast mail shield and see if that fixes it as it did on mine.
