I opened up my email and my entire inbox was empty!

I downloaded my new work email to my Thunderbird account and when I first opened the email the inbox was full of emails. I exited out of Thunderbird and the next time I opened it up my inbox was empty! Any suggestions on where my emails went and if I can get them back?
