Your default browser is the app that opens when you click a link in an email, document, or another application. You can change your default browser at any time using your device’s system settings.

What is a default browser?

Your default browser is the application your operating system uses to open web links. When you click a link, it opens in your default browser. You can have multiple browsers installed on your device at the same time, but only one can be your default browser for that device.

Note: Changing your default browser does not remove other browsers.

Change your default browser on Linux (GNOME)

  1. Open Activities.
  2. Type and click on Default Applications.
  3. Under Web, select your preferred browser.

Change your default browser on Linux (KDE Plasma)

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Go to Applications > Default Applications.
  3. Under Web Browser, choose your preferred browser.
  4. Click on Apply, then OK.

Change your default browser on Windows 11

  1. Click the Start Windows11StartButton menu button and open Settings (or press the Windows key Windows11Key + I).
  2. Select Apps from the sidebar.
  3. Click Default apps.
  4. Search for or select the browser you want to use in the Set defaults for applications box.
  5. Click Set default at the top.

Note: Windows 11 may list file and link types (like HTTP and HTTPS). Using Set default applies the most common settings automatically.

Change your default browser on Windows 10

  1. Click the Start Windows10StartButton menu button and open Settings.
  2. Click Apps.
  3. Select Default apps.
  4. Scroll to Web browser.
  5. Click the current browser and choose a new one.

Change your default browser on macOS

  1. Open System Settings from the Apple menu.
  2. Click Desktop & Dock.
  3. Scroll to Default web browser.
  4. Choose your preferred browser from the dropdown.

Note: On macOS Monterey (12) or earlier, go to System Preferences > General to find this setting.

Set your default browser from within Firefox

You can also start the process from within Firefox, if you wish to make Firefox your default browser:

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and select Settings (or Preferences, in some cases).Click the menu button Fx89menuButton and select Settings.
  3. At the top of the GeneralAccount and sync or Home and startup page, click the Make default button.
    Note: If Firefox is already your default browser, the button will be missing.
